On 5 November 2020, Emden-based insurance broker Heinrich Elbracht hosted its 15th specialist conference on current topics in maritime law and marine insurance law. The topic of this year's conference was ‘Political Instability and its effect on Shipping’. Our partner Dr Maximilian Guth spoke about the ‘BRILLIANTE VIRTUOSO’.
The very well attended seminar took place on the Elbracht’s premises at the old inland harbour with a view over the new Delft and the harbour.
After the welcome address by the managing partners Dr Dirk and Bernd Terbeek, Tobias Oemichen from ERGO kicked off the session with a risk assessment on terrorism in the Red Sea and the sailing around the Cape of Good Hope. This was followed by a presentation by Erik Dusin from Toribos and Rainer Langemeyer from Hansekuranz on Kidnap & Ransom insurance. After a short coffee break, our partner Dr Maximilian Guth spoke about the ‘BRILLIANTE VIRTUOSO’ from the perspective of German maritime insurance law – a case involving an alleged pirate attack off the Yemeni coast and referred to in Lloyd’s List edition of 05 February 2024 as “one of the biggest marine insurance frauds in Lloyd’s of London history“ - The seminar concluded with a presentation by Simon Badley, Head of Transmarine Underwriting at MECO Group (London), on the underwriting practices of Lloyd's of London with a particular focus on loss of hire insurance.
The seminar was rounded off with a joint lunch - a good opportunity to exchange ideas with old and new business contacts.

Our partner Dr Maximilian Guth attended the 10th AIDA Europe Conference in Athens and gave a presentation on the topic of "Hull cover for depreciation in value". Dr. Guth also attended the Marine Insurance Greece conference, which was organised on the occasion of Posidonia. But it wasn't all work: The Polygreen Welcome Party at the Beach Club DOT will be fondly remembered.
